We were very lucky to have our born and bred local, Sarah Cross to come and visit with our Year 9 students earlier this year. Sarah has a vast scientific knowledge of bees and exudes her passion when sharing this with others. Our Year 9 students learnt first hand from this field and research professional about how bees go about their business and the numerous benefits that we humans gain, and sometimes take for granted, from their existence. Sarah brought some of her bees from home (including a Queen bee) to supplement the learning taking place in our Plant Biology topic in Science. Students were able to ‘feel’ like real beekeepers by trying on beekeeper suits and gloves, and were given the challenge of building a beehive. --Whaea Rachael. www.sarahcsbees.co.nz
